Meet new Chamber member: Jay Lanstein
The South Boston Chamber of Commerce is excited to welcome our newest member — Jay Lanstein, a longtime Southie resident and seasoned financial advisor who has more than two decades of experience in the investment and advisory world.
After spending 23 years behind the scenes in non-client-facing roles at Cantella & Co., where he rose from intern to CEO, Jay has recently pivoted his career to work directly with individuals, business owners, and municipalities at his newly named Cantella Capital Group. Jay kept part of the original name so as not to confuse clients and to keep it more personal.
For most of his career, Jay was supporting other advisors — helping them grow their businesses, solving operational challenges, managing risk. “Now I’m doing all of that for myself and my own clients.”
The decision to make this change stemmed from a desire to step away from the increasingly burdensome regulatory landscape and rekindle the passion for his work.
“It just got worse and worse with regulation by enforcement,” Jay said, noting the constant regulatory overreach made the job less about helping people and more about jumping through hoops.
He now spends his days helping individuals plan for retirement, save for their children’s educations, and invest wisely. Jay helps his clients structure their investments. “Do you need a retirement plan? Do you need a 529 plan to save for your kids? How do you put your money to work in the most tax-efficient way? And how do you create a plan and stick to it?”
And with the stock market as it is currently, “A lot of what I do is psychological counseling as well as financial counseling.”
In addition to his individual clients, he works with about 30 municipalities in Michigan, managing conservative investment strategies in accordance with strict state laws. He’s hoping to expand that model into Massachusetts and eventually to banks as well.
Alongside his longtime business partner and a few support staff, the team is focused on personalized service.
A South Boston resident for the past 18 years, he has deep roots in the community. “My mom’s side of the family lived on G Street for over 100 years,” he said. “It's a neighborhood feel, but you've got the benefits of the city, and the benefits of a small-town feel. You can walk to a lot of places. There's a lot of young families, and it's just a good place to live.”
He had seen some Chamber events on Facebook and thought to himself, “I should look into that.” After seeing a client’s photo at a Chamber event, he decided it was time to get involved, especially since there weren’t any financial advisors on the Chamber directory.
He’s looking forward to meeting people through the Chamber and building relationships and connections.
“I'm excited for the next chapter of what I'm going to do when I grow up,” he joked.
