Tell us about your business — what do you do, and what inspired you to start it?
Mass Underground has two locations. We opened our first in Charlestown in 2021. Like many, we spent the COVID years training in home gyms and dingy basements — craving community and some sense of normalcy. At the same time, the fitness industry was shifting toward boutique studios and class-based workouts. But we wanted something different. We set out to create a space that brought people back to the basics: lifting, training, and building real community. At our core, we believe that we are an old-school gym with modern amenities.
What sets your business apart from others in your industry?
Our focus is on the fundamentals: strength training, intentional programming, and a strong sense of community. While the fitness industry continues to grow in many directions, we’ve stayed rooted in creating a space that’s approachable, no-frills, and centered around personal progress. It’s not about trends — it’s about building something sustainable, together.
Why did you choose to join the Chamber, and what do you hope to gain from your membership?
We chose to join the Chamber as a way to become an active member in our community — to keep our finger on the pulse and to be constantly adapting based on the wants/needs of our community In South Boston. We recognize and appreciate the hard work that Chambers do to advocate for small businesses, as well as their commitment to creating a strong network.
What’s one thing you love about doing business in South Boston?
The community in South Boston is unmatched. We have been so fortunate to be welcomed into this vibrant city and are thrilled with the amount of support we have received since Day 1.
Can you share a fun fact or something people might not know about your business?
The vision for Mass Underground was dreamed up one day after hammering away at a makeshift bench made of scrap wood in our basement. (Trust us, the equipment has since gotten quite the upgrade!)
What has been your proudest moment or biggest achievement in your business so far?
Being surrounded by so much love and support has given us the opportunity to bring Mass Underground to Southie. Without our Charlestown clients, family, and friends, this never would have been possible. We are so proud to be part of this new community and are so grateful for the opportunity.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out?
There are no roadblocks, just speed bumps. Let your passion drive you, be creative enough to find solutions to problems, and surround yourself with people that want to see you succeed.
